Dear family and friends,
Even though this is a community for retired missionaries, it is amazing where our retirees get involved.
- Some spend time formatting New Testament Bible translations before they are sent off to the printers.
- Many people keep in touch with the church leaders in areas where the missionary has served for many years.
- At least one couple connects regularly with Indonesian Christians who are living in the local area.
- A group of folks have a weekly service at a rehab / nursing home.
- Once a week men and women meet with young people who are in a juvenile detention center.
- One of our retirees does cleaning and disinfecting in the local Sanford hospital.
- Our folks hold personal Bible studies and meet with those interested in discipleship.
- Often the speaker in our Tuesday or Friday morning chapel services is one of our retirees.
- Many of our folks teach Sunday School classes for children or adults.
- Our retirees serve as pastors, deacons, or committee members in their local churches.
- More than a few are caregivers for spouses whose health has deteriorated.
- We have folks who volunteer to drive others to doctor’s appointments or take neighbors shopping.
- There are others that have regular blogs or engage in street witnessing.
- Many spend time praying for requests mentioned in prayer letters sent here by e-mail from mission fields around the world.
- A good number of our retirees are volunteering here at The Homes. This would include doing laundry for our Latham Center residents, keeping our in-house library in good order, helping our grounds crew, or volunteering in the kitchen.
- Still others travel 2 miles down the road and volunteer at our mission home office.
I could go on and on about many other areas where our folks continue to serve our Savior. It is obvious that even if our missionaries are officially retired, they continue to get involved wherever the Lord leads them.
Last February I (Wanda) had a total knee replacement of my left knee. I was told that complete healing would take 6 months to a year. I felt like I was pretty much back to normal after 6 or 7 months. Now I have made plans to have my right knee done. I have already had my pre-op appointment with the PA in my surgeon’s office. The surgery is scheduled for Monday morning October 20th. Even though there will be some recovery time, I am glad to be having the surgery. Daily I am doing physical therapy exercises at home to strengthen both of my legs in preparation. There are volunteers and staff who will be covering my job responsibilities while I am out of commission. I am thankful for each member on my housekeeping team.
I will close with a few prayer requests.
- We still have 8 weeks of hurricane season. Pray that it will be uneventful.
- Please pray for me as I prepare for knee surgery.
- Pray that the surgery and recovery will go well.
- Continue to pray for Brad and his sleep issues.
- Pray that we will use our energy and time wisely as we serve the Lord here at The Homes.
