How Others Can Help
Lord, I am so glad you are walking with me through my cancer “adventure.” I’m trying, Lord, to count it all joy like James 1:2-5 encourages us to do. To have you beside me is the greatest gift! However, today I want to thank you for bringing special, caring people into my life. You placed them in my life at this very time and they are such a blessing to me. Thank you that these friends and family can be my “Jesus with skin on.” Thank you for encouraging me through these special people.
Many people sent flowers, made meals, sent cards, brought books, came to visit, made me a blanket, hired housekeepers, prayed for me, and gave me a call or sent an e-mail. They all blessed me with their kindness. I was encouraged each day by someone’s caring words or deeds.
My wonderful husband has lived this whole journey with me. I know it must have been so hard to always be the strong one, to take care of all his responsibilities and mine as well. I know I wished that he had a healthy wife who could go out to dinner, be in crowds without worrying about getting someone’s germs, clean the house or go to the grocery store. I am sure he longed for a “normal” life again. He has always been there for me and I want this to be a BIG thank you to him. He fed me ice chips after surgery, kept me company during lonely nights in the hospital, and tenderly helped me sit up in bed. He did laundry at home, kept the bills paid, and filled the refrigerator with food. Lord, I am so thankful for this man you gave me as a companion in life. We are living the “in sickness and …” phrase of the wedding vows. Could he really have imagined it would be like this when he said those words so many years ago as a young man on the verge of adulthood? I doubt it. So, I thank you Lord for this amazing man and for giving him the strength to help me through this.
Perhaps you are reading this and you are the caregiver. May God bless you with strength and an extra dose of patience. This may seem like an endless job, but know you are truly blessing those you serve.
I pray that you have someone (a loved one, an encouraging friend, or an exceptional nurse) to uphold you during this hard time of life. When your circumstances are hard to be thankful for…maybe you could thank him for the people he has sent your way.
Most days of battling cancer you wouldn’t think would be spent in thanksgiving. But, today I have chosen to focus on the blessings God has sent my way, in the midst of the struggle, to help me not give up. Here are some verses to ponder that perhaps will help you find reasons to be thankful.
Psalm 136: 1, 23 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, His love endures forever. (Give thanks) to the one who remembered us in our low estate. His love endures forever.
I Corinthians 15: 58 But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
I Thessalonians 5: 18 Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
1 Timothy 6:17b Put your hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.
Nahum1:7 The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him.
